Santa Got Run Over by a Ricer, and Souza by a Truck
Long story short, we were walking home in the dark, there was a long line of cars waiting to turn out to get on the main street, so we walked behind the first truck so that it wouldn't have to wait longer than necessary for us to pass, which is normal. It was dark, and we were looking down the street to double and triple check that there were no other cars coming, so we didn't see that the truck in front (that we had just walked behind) was pulling the truck behind with a cable. We both tripped over it, and my cat-like reflexes saved me, but Souza fell down, and as he was on the ground, the truck in front started to pull out, pulling the truck behind over his foot. He turned really quick in a way that wouldn't break his foot, and popped right back up really quick, with just some scrapes on the skin. We were both really freaked out afterwards, and a little annoyed that the guys in the truck that was being pulled didn't honk or warn us or anything. We're all good and safe, with no major damage, and super grateful it didn't turn out worse than it could have.
This week FLEW by, even though it was really cold. It gets hot around 1ish, but still gets below freezing at night. We can see our breath in our house 24/7 which is fun. Our electric heaters don't help too much, but we're still out here thrivin.
Had some really cool experiences with investigators this week. A couple weeks ago, we found a record of an old investigator who had progressed a lot, but we didn't know her so we went to go visit and see if there was anything we could do to help her out. We talked and shared some scriptures, and then at the end I gave her 4 year old daughter a pass-along card with a collage of pictures of Jesus. We went back to her house this week, and the daughter, Mia, beamed and said hi and waved at us. Her mom told me that Mia had put the card on the fridge and carried it around the house sometime, and it was actually on the table right then since she was showing it to her friend who was over, saying "look what the Elders gave me!" which was really cute and touching. I'm glad I could bring that little bit of brightness to that girl's life.
Went to an immigration building this week about an hour away to sign some papers and finalize my green card, which I now have. They had a festive buffalo statue. Pictured behind me are two secretaries -- the Mexican one was trained by my cousin who served in this mission but who has been home for over a year.
Got some cool wooden nametags at a store owned by a member last week. The store also has a lot of Chinese stuff, since there are a decent amount of Chinese settlers here (at least at one time in history), and Elder Souza bought a chinese hat. I had to fight pretty hard to convince him not to wear it out proselyting.
Had Zone Conference this week, and we had some special Christmas party events and snacks that the stake president here put on! It was nice to have someone put in the work to do something especially special just for us.
Elder Souza also hit a year this week, so we bought a cake. We waited all day to eat it, only to cut in and realize that it was filled with Pineapple, which he is allergic to. He was pretty disappointed but I couldn't stop myself from cracking up. He scraped it out and ate it anyways and is still alive, so we're good.
Had an emergency potty break for Elder Souza in our old house, and the owner (who is a member) had a Christmas tree up and was playing Christmas music, which got me in the Spirit.
Saw some people hanging their socks out to dry on a cactus. Also found some sunglasses on the street that did a great job at blocking out ALL the light.
Much love, y Feliz Navidad!
-Elder Peters
