Mexican Turkey and the Twilight Zone
Happy late Thanksgiving y'all.
For thanksgiving, we ate lunch with a member, which is normal. He said for us Americans (Elder Jensen and his new companion were eating with us too) he was giving us Mexican Turkey in honor of Thanksgiving, aka chicken. It was really good though, no complaints. Other than that our Thanksgiving was pretty uneventful and just a normal day, until when we were heading back home, we got a text from the bishop telling us to go to his house for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner! He studied at ISU for a bit to get his masters, and speaks perfect English, and said that his family picked up the tradition of Thanksgiving when they were living in the US. They did have on football for a while, until their favorite soccer team started playing a game, so the soccer game was playing in the other room when we got there. It was a super fun surprise.
It rained all day Tuesday, was super cold and muddy, and then the wind blew like nothing else all of Wednesday. Pictures attached. Felt like we were in a video game trying to navigate the streets hopping puddles and sometimes having to backtrack when we reached a dead end with inundated streets.
Had an incident where Elder Souza was trying to kill a fly with a dictionary in our house. Long story short the dictionary flew through the window and we had to explain that to the owner of the house and are having a guy from our ward come to help us repair it.
We had a lesson with an investigator that we didn't think would progress, but when we came back for the next lesson she said she had read the Book of Mormon and was willing to go to church (even though she didn't show - it's the thought that counts right?)! At the end of the lesson she said she thought I was from France or something because of my accent. I think I'm picking up Elder Souza's portuguese accent. We left that lesson thinking we had spent about 40 minutes or so in the lesson, only to look down and realize that we were an hour late for our next appointment and had spent 3 hours in there. We're convinced we were in the Twilight Zone. It all worked out well though because our appointment hadn't been home all day so he wouldn't have been there if we were on time either.
Withdrew some of our bi-monthy money today for groceries and such, and the ATM paid me $1250 worth of pesos in only $50 bills, so I felt super rich.
Got to help a member translate today! He is having some legal troubles with his girlfriend trying to give custody of their daughter to her mom when he wants custody of her, and he was deported and she lives in the US among lots of other problems. He doesn't speak English and the lawyer is from Albuquerque and doesn't speak Spanish, so that was a cool service opportunity. We are hoping and praying that he'll be able to be with his daughter more than they're allowing him to be with her now, especially since it sounds like the grandma isn't taking great care of his daughter. He has all the papers for all the court rulings and stuff, so we think everything should be okay.
When we were waiting for the lawyer to look some things up, they brought out some baby Chihuahuas, and I'd never thought I'd say it, but my heart is softening towards the Chihuahuan breed, especially after seeing the babies and the way the momma was worried about them and stuff. We realized they were bite sized, so we made some Chihuahua tacos.
Love all you guys! Remember to think of Jesus a little more this month (an every month), and how he would want us to treat and love others.
